As a general education math, science and social studies class, I want all students to learn to love math and science as much as I do. There is no better way than through creating. I would love for my students to have more opportunities to make and explore to learn.
My students are different from when I was growing up- they have so many more technology-based games and tools, I want them to use their imagination to learn too!
As Albert Einstein said, "Creativity is intelligence having fun!"
Because so much of what children do is technology based, children are losing creativity. This Maker's Space will allow them to explore their creativity while learning about the engineering process and how to overcome obstacles. Learning through failures is important because it helps students learn to persevere when a situation is hard. Most students want the right answer, right way. Through these learning experiences, they will see that it's okay to make mistakes! My students have been excited as they have seen me transform an area into our classroom into a creative STEM based space. They can't wait for it to be ready to use!
My Project
I have found that my students love to create and through these supplies for a maker's space, they will be able to do just that. In a time when students are so interested in video games and technology, we have a unique opportunity to invest in our future through encouraging creativity. The supplies I am requesting are a mix of tools for hands-on exploration. The makey makey is a small panel board that allows students to explore circuitry. How neat is it that you can make a row of bananas turn into a piano?
The circuit making supplies will allow my students to explore something that has sparked their interest in class and build on their interests.
They are always asking to pull out the circuit building kits to make stuff and these supplies, such as the led bulbs, copper tape, batteries, and circuit stickers starter kit will make their possibilities limitless! Students will use the paper makers space book to guide them in the activities. Though building with the various types of blocks, such as the magnetic blocks and snowflake blocks , students will learn abut the engineering process through exploration. They will learn what works and what doesn't. They will also learn which shape and designs of structures is the most sound. The resource books will aid in ideas for projects they can explore. I will be able to use these ideas to guide my students in their exploration and the storage cart will be a central location to store materials so that they are readily available to students.
