Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Fortunately, my class is held in a computer lab, allowing my students to work with some technology. My students utilize the computers and Internet everyday in my class and I look for two things from them. That they think for themselves and always question things around them.

Union City is an urban school district with a large population of Latino students.

However, the school district has been slated a model urban school district in the state of NJ. We are unique in the sense that the whole building has been dedicated to 9th grade freshman. Jose Marti Freshman Academy is not only a school for our students, but in many cases, it is also a second family. There are times our students spend more time in school than home. Some students use Jose Marti as an escape from negative things going on in their homes.

My Project

Having a Makerbot in my classroom will open doors for my students that do not even exist yet. Makerbot is the future. It is the new "Internet" technology we all experienced in the 90's. By allowing my students to be exposed to this technology, which will change life as we know it, will give them a foot in the door as the is technology grows and spills over every aspect of life. My students have the opportunity to play "Edison" or "Einstein" and use their imagination to create whatever they have been dreaming about. Makerbot is the future and by allowing my students a glimpse of this technology, allows these urban kids to have a step in the door.

By having a Makerbot in my classroom, I will be preparing them for a future that is still being drawn up.

It almost turns the students into the experiment. What can you create? How far can your imagination be stretched? With the latest emphasis on rigor and raising the bar on student expectation, my students will be ready to handle any situation and will remember this experience forever.
