Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of us, especially students, often have difficulty with abstract concepts in STEM subjects. Wouldn't it be great to be able to create a sturdy 3D model to help with understanding these concepts? With MakerBot this dream can become reality.
I teach middle school students, grades 6 - 8, in a public K-8 center.
We have all races and levels of SES in our school, though there are over 50% of our students on free and reduced-price lunch. We also have a moderate amount of students in ESE and ESOL.
My Project
Using the MakerBot 3D printer bundle in my classroom will enable the students to increase their computational thinking skills. They would work with a Pair Programming partner to explore and create rough sketches of concepts that could be illuminated with 3D models.
Next they would use the software of the MakerBot to build the models on the computer. They would refine their models until they are ready and then print them out using the MakerBot 3D printer. The models can be used by the students in my class and shared with other classes in the school.
Some concepts that would lend themselves to the creation of models and manipulatives could be: algebraic formulas, models of the cell, parts to enhance our robotics program, architectural designs, and 3D printouts of artwork developed in our computer arts magnet programs, just to name a very few.
Receiving the MakerBot Academy 3D Printing Bundle will improve my classroom because the students would have one more way to develop their technology and problem solving skills that is on the cutting edge.
My students will gain skills they can use now and in the future - computer science and technology is the fastest growing area for careers and this program will give them an edge in the highly competitive technology field.
