Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from all parts of the world; some of them have been displaced due to non-viable conditions in their country of origin. In some cases, their parents have risked even their lives to make it possible for them to arrive to the United States of America. Our school community consists of Cubans, Venezuelans, Vietnamese, Dominicans, and Indians, you name it. The majority of them come from Spanish-speaking countries in which learning English as a second language was not an option.
In spite of the language barrier my students face day in and out, they are resilient, creative, clever, and always try their best to catch up with the rest of the students who are native English speakers.
This year, I want to give them the opportunity to use their creativity and choice further by creating a Maker Space for them.
Maker Spaces are great tools for teachers to help students find their own voice as well as to help them discover and practice important skills such as critical thinking and problem solving. For this reason, having one will be very beneficial to my students,
Thank you for anything help you may provide!
My Project
I am requesting printing starter kits, tape, yarn, wood pieces my students can use to build, design and take their learning to a new level of understanding. These materials will encourage them to explore their creativity and materials in new ways. Our Makerspace will be available to all my students (170+) and everything that is made will also be showcased in our room with pride!
Making and tinkering are powerful ways to learn.
The challenges they may experience while using the Makerspace will make their problem skills stronger; it will fuel their curiosity, engagement, and creativity at the same time, and the best part is that a Makerspace has the potential to address skills necessary for the 21st Century.
This Makerspace will allows the student to take control over their own learning, it makes a student go from being a passive learner to becoming an innovator and creator, and that gives them confidence and a sense of pride. Because of the nature of the making process, a Makerspace has the potential of helping a student go from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset. That is best that could happen to any student!
