My Students

The children of immigrants, or immigrants themselves- my students value hard work and the opportunities they have, but face many social, emotional, and economic challenges. Over half of them are English Learners and 90 percent come from low income families. Many have come to the United States fleeing intolerance or other hardships at home, and are now learning to live in a very diverse community.

My students are developing into reflective learners who seek out opportunities for action.

At our school, we have a focus on communication through writing and presentation literacy. They are learning to tell their own stories. And with such a wide range of experiences to share and to learn from, they have a lot of stories to tell.

My class is caring, curious, and motivated. They love team-building activities and practicing their leadership skills. They enjoy math, and the Zumba breaks that come afterwards. They get lost in stories and beg for one more chapter. They love using technology to develop research skills, and to share what they've learned. They are great at making do with limited resources, but have so much potential to achieve more, given the opportunity.

My Project

My students learn best when their brains and their bodies are engaged. While they listen to me teach a math or science lesson, their hands need to be busy modeling the concepts we are discussing.

Students take ownership of their learning when they play an active role during class time.

I recently bought a curriculum supplement for my math program called Maker Math. It outlines how to use materials such as unifix cubes, beads, legos, and counting chips to allow students to build and sort while they learn, helping them to visualize numbers and the relationships between them. Beads and pipe cleaners will become interactive number lines, uni-fix cubes with numbers written on them will help students internalize concepts such as place value and the order of operations, and legos of different sizes will let students manipulate fractional parts.

We also have a science curriculum supplement called Mystery Science, which proposes hands on experiments that students can do to help them discover science concepts. With the materials I've requested, students will be able to experience sound vibrations by making a paper cup telephone, use beads and rubber bands to demonstrate kinetic vs. potential energy, and make observations of different types of rocks.

Participating in hands on math and science lessons will increase my students' ability to problem solve, as they will be able to try multiple iterations of an idea without feeling like they messed up and need to erase. Math and science will become something they do, not just something they listen to.
