My Students

Learning is about having the opportunity to problem solve and create. By rethinking our computer lab into a place where all learners can design, learn, problem solve, and create individually or collaboratively, I hope to create a learning environment that inspires learners to pursue their passions.

Starting this January, the SP Design Lab will be open several times a week during student lunch recess as well as after-school on Wednesday.

It will be expanding hours after-school in February. The purpose of the SP Design Lab is to start to build an environment where all learners have a space to create, problem solve, and pursue interests and passions. This year the goal is to start to build the foundation and expand over the course of the next few years to provide a space both in school and after-school for learners. The SP Design Lab is a four part approach. The following are the four parts that are currently planned to be implemented: 1. iDesign - 3D Design and Printing using our 3D printer, filament, clay 2. iCreate - Videogaming and Creation using Coding programs and Minecraft EDU 3. iConnect - Design with Circuitry using Makey Makey, SpinBot, Drawdio, Squishy Circuits 4. iBuild - Design with Recycling using Makedo kits, cardboard, looms, paper, clay

My Project

The SP Design Lab is modeled after Makerspaces. Based on the Makerspace philosophy - To describe them simply, makerspaces are community centers with tools. Makerspaces combine manufacturing equipment, community, and education for the purposes of enabling community members to design, prototype and create manufactured works that would not be possible to create with the resources available to individuals working alone. The SP Design Lab is bringing the Makerspace environment into our elementary school for our learning community through the integration of technology and hands-on learning. My students need materials that foster hands-on creation. The PLA filament will help students to print their created 3D designs. The Bare Conductive Pens will help students to learn about circuitry using another medium.

Learning is about having the opportunity to problem solve and create.

By rethinking our computer lab into a place where all learners can design, learn, problem solve, and create individually or collaboratively, I hope to create a learning environment that inspires learners to pursue their passions and interests. Using our 3D printer (grant funded), PC computers, and iPads, I hope to expand on the options that our learners have to create and design.
