Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Friendships are one of the best things about school, and one of the strongest reinforcements of school attendance. As a preschool special education teacher, it is of utter importance to help encourage friendships through contrived and natural social interactions.

My Pre-K (PAL) students look forward to outside play time.

We are fortunate enough to have a considerable amount of space where the children are able to ride bikes, play with a sensory table and apparatus structure, and make baskets playing basketball. There isn't much in terms of a variety of manipulative equipment, but the students have found their own special ways of making the most of what is available to them.

I have noticed that some of my least-social students have enjoyed playing the same games and the same outside areas (stations) and not interacting with their peers. Having a variety of manipulative equipment that requires my students to interact and have a mutual goal with another peer, is a step closer to social interaction, and a step closer to forging a friendship. Having students with multiple disabilities and various social skills is a challenge; this would greatly help foster the skills we are trying to encourage in school.

My Project

Fortunately I am able to work in a District where some supplies are given to our PALs program but unfortunately not all supplies last or are given to us for outdoor use. The manipulative "toys" that my students have shown enthusiasm in playing do not belong to my classroom or Preschool for All Learners (PAL) program. They are brought for my students to play with during Adapted Physical Education (APE) time or borrowed from others classes. Some of these items are old and tattered and have lost their function. I am requesting various materials to be used during outside play such as manipulatives for the water table, a set of bowling pins, playdough for outside table tops activities, a set of Keep it Safe Traffic signs so students can learn to follow directions as well as be exposed to print when outside and other various manipulatives. My students will learn how to share, take turns, and -- most importantly -- make friends with these new toys.

This project is important to not only myself, as a special education teacher, but for my students and their parents.

Some of the reasons why students are in our program is their lack of social and communication skills, among other disabilities. Parents are encouraged when they hear their children talk about their "friends at school" or "what they did at school." As an educator, I want to encourage the development of these social and communication skills, and I am more than confident that providing these toys made for sharing will help this cause.
