My Students

As a first year teacher, I have been SO lucky to have the class I have this year, filled with incredibly sweet, funny, kind, eager learners. The challenges I feel we have faced this year as students and teachers are the difficulties of virtual learning, the strain of teaching and learning in a socially distanced in person classroom, the uncertainty of the combination of both, and the lack of tools and supplies for students to learn with (both at home and in my brand new classroom, which came to me totally empty). Through all of it, my kids have shown their incredible flexibility, resilience, sense of humor, great curiosity, and excitement for new knowledge. I have no doubt that the students in my class this year will go on to do great things, from the creative artists, to the curious scientists, to the avid mathematicians, great readers, and little leaders that they are.

My Project

There is an increased need for manipulatives with both virtual and in-person learning because they can't be shared. Every student needs their own individual set. I feel it is especially important for students to have as much hands-on learning as possible during this screen-time based era. During the periods that we have been (partially) in-person, the amount of "stay in your seat" time has increased significantly due to social distancing guidelines. It is very difficult for a six year old (anyone) to stay sitting at a desk in a tiny hard chair for so many hours of the day. I feel it is always beneficial to offer flexible seating, but this year it would make an extra big difference!
