My Students

Imagine trying to read a big book, teach vocabulary, introduce new phonics, and write examples all on a tiny easel which was built in 1989. This easel is not easy to work with and it is too small to display all these activities at one time. This easel limits my teaching because I am unable to display the vocabulary, big book, and phonics at the same time.

Our school promotes a "Kids First" attitude and every decision that is made is based on how it will impact our students.

My students are an amazing group of children who come from hardworking, lower middle-class families. Many of these families have parents that are working two or more jobs to keep their families afloat. For some of them, school is the only real constant in their lives. My class is very eager to learn and they all want to become better readers. I am very fortunate to have students who want to read and who want to feel accomplished. As an educator I want them to have every opportunity to feel successful in the classroom and I want them to have all the right skills to be able to read a good book on their own.

My Project

I enjoy teaching my students when they are right in front of me. I love to feel their energy and have found it more effective to teach in this manner. When students are learning to read they need as much support and help as possible. This means students need to see objectives, examples, vocabulary, books, and reading strategies at the same time. A new easel would allow me to display everything without having to tape up other pieces of paper on the side of my small easel. A new easel would keep me organized and focused on my lessons.

This is a crucial tool to teach first grade students, but sadly it is one that classroom teachers must provide themselves.

Please help me help my students! An easel would allow students to focus on the learning objectives at hand and target specific skills essential for learning. I understand that many teachers have needs, and I appreciate any generosity that is shown. I feel this teaching tool would make a REAL difference in the learning of my first grade students!!!
