My Students
Do you remember going on field trips, summer vacations, zoos, and museums? Many of these students have not been outside the city they live in and have not had the chance to experience the world around them.
Over 90% of our students live in poverty.
The students are reading on levels from Kindergarten to 4th grade in the second grade. Everyday these students face challenges no child should have to face. Reading is not a priority in many of these homes. I want to continue to get my students excited about reading and have them share their excitement with their families! Going beyond the city that these students live in is not possible for so many of these families. Many of these students are excited to learn about new things and discover new things. By bringing these books into the classroom, I can encourage students to learn about new things and encourage them to dream about the world around them.
My Project
I am requesting leveled nonfiction books and non-fiction prompts so that I can bring the outside world into our classroom. Not only will these books be used in the classroom and with Accelerated Reader, they will also be going home with the students to read as part of our schools Book Bag Express Program. My students will learn how to read nonfiction books, learn to write reports, identify the main idea and supporting details of the text and so much more. These books will be used on a daily basis with the students.
Having this nonfiction level library in my classroom with help bring the outside world alive in my classroom.
With the leveled library all my students will be able to find a nonfiction book to read whether they are reading on a kindergarten level or a 4th grade level. Hopefully I will be able to open their minds and inspire them to dream big.
