Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What goes on under our skin? Because it is so hard to visualize how organs and cells work together to keep us healthy, my students and I use shirts, felt, markers and paint to make the invisible, visible! This year, I want to incorporate the latest technology to really make these shirts shine.

My students come from five continents, speak a dozen languages, and are different from one another in countless ways.

What unites them is that they have all come to the United States seeking a better life, a great education, and most importantly to learn English. They all carry the experiences of life and their former education with them. At our school we want to empower them with the words to speak with one another about their past, but also give them the experiences and language to do great things together. From our school, they graduate to public and private college, lucrative careers here or back in their native countries, and some even serve in the military. They learn with one another and become bilingual and sometimes trilingual citizens of the world.

My Project

At the same time students learn about their inner organs, I want them to get in touch with their inner maker. With inexpensive white t-shirts as our template and basic electronics components, I want them to dream big! The great thing about the maker mindset is that with a few of the same basic ingredients - batteries, conductive thread, LED lights and simple circuit boards, there are limitless possibilities. I am requesting e-textile kits and more of these basic components to complement the felt, paint, and markers we already have at our disposal thanks to previous generous donations. Lights to trace the path of blood through the heart? Blinking LEDs that mimic the firing of neurons? An accelerometer to make muscles light up when you move? I can't wait to see how students make organ systems shine with these tools.

Students need the opportunity to make choices about how they want to work.

It is the same formula that will make them self-starting and inventive in whatever field they choose. My hope is that this project gives them the space to be creative in art, biology, electronics, and presentation. They will learn a lot of language, get informed about their bodies, and learn a lot from each other as they collaborate to create something unforgettable. Your donation can make the amazing possible.
