Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Middle school can be tough. And Middle School in the city is even tougher. My students are asked to navigate the muddy waters of adolescents while competing in the high stakes urban High School game. Most of my students come from minority, low income households and haven’t had access to all the advantages of their higher income peers. I want to help level the playing field.
My students inspire me with their creativity and their curiosity.
I want to make sure they have the materials and the experiences that will prepare them to be successful in High School and beyond.
My Project
I discovered Shakespeare in fourth grade- my teacher had a copy of Taming of the Shrew in the graphic novel style. I never could have understood the complex language without the pictures and illustrations to help me. Now, as a teacher, I understand the power of graphic novels to help my students understand and connect with complex texts and ideas. I have used graphic novels to help teach Shakespeare in the past and have been amazed by how they help students understand the story and generally keep kids engaged in what could be a very dense and confusing text.
Your generous donation will help students understand and connect with Shakespeare’s work.
These engaging resources will an integral part of this unit. It is critical that students are engaged and interested in the text because, through another grant, students will have the opportunity to attend a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream by a world renown company here in the city. The graphic novel will be the entry point for the students to read Shakespeare with confidence so they are fully prepared to watch and enjoy the text come to life on stage. The chance to read and view Shakespeare’s work on stage can be life changing and you could be part of it!
