This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher at a high-needs elementary school in Nevada. I have the privilege of teaching music to over 700 amazingly sweet, high-energy students in grades K through 5. A majority of the students I teach are English language learners and are part of the free and reduced lunch program. Every class in our school comes to music once a week for a 50 minute lesson. Budget cuts have left me with the most crowded music classes I have had in my 6 years of teaching elementary music.
I believe that EVERY CHILD deserves their own space. The music classroom regularly faces severe overcrowding... especially when 2 classes are combined for their weekly music lesson. At times, there are up to 45 little wiggly bodies in my room all at once! Not only do these students have to wait twice as long for turns on the instruments, they have to compete for their own personal space on the carpet. When we are not dancing to the music or marching to the beat, my students are seated on the floor in the middle of the room. Lessons are too often interrupted with complaints of a student's personal space being invaded. Even with numbers painted on the wall to help organize the students into rows, young students still have trouble maintaining a "bubble" of personal space.
"A Place for Everyone" carpets in the music room would allow EVERY student to have their own clearly defined personal space. Students would be better equipped to focus on the music lessons being taught without the distraction of students around them invading their space.
Your donation will help give my students the ability to focus clearly on the lessons being taught without the distraction or frustration that comes with other students sitting too close to them and invading their personal space. This focus will allow them to have amazing musical experiences week after week, year after year!
