Make Room Boys! Inspiring Girls to Become Women in STEM
Help me give my students the opportunity to see female faces in STEM careers by having access to materials that inspire them to identify and defy stereotypes that act as barriers to their future success.
At our elementary school we are "learning to live and living to learn". This motto is true now more than ever as we adapt to distance learning and the new normal that COVID-19 has introduced.
Our school focuses on three positive behavior standards: Kindness, respect, and perseverance.
The 640+ students of our school truly embody all three traits as they encounter learning opportunities and build relationships with others every day.
We have a transient student body impacted by a nearby military installation, as well as socioeconomic factors. Our students readily welcome new students and military students to the school and help them acclimate to school routines and culture. I absolutely love seeing our students help each other learn!
My Project
Our school prides itself on teaching students to think critically and challenge stereotypes laid before them. This project is a continuation of that work and aims to help girls develop the confidence and character needed to challenge and prepare themselves for a future of limitless possibilities, including careers in STEM, such as marine biology, paleontology, engineering, invention, and biology.
These specific books were selected because they portray a diverse group of females from various racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds, as well as varying learning styles and ability levels, thus reflecting the diverse group of girls we teach in our classrooms.
The books selected are adaptable for all grade levels, but will be used for kindergarten through 5th grades during socially distanced classroom counseling instruction, as well as virtual counseling in both large and small group lessons.
Using bibliotherapy and art therapy to build esteem in our female students creates opportunities for them to see examples of female success in history, as well as imagine their own paths to success in STEM and beyond.
