Make Reading Fun: Struggling Readers Can Learn Too!
My students need high interest books that can help in their literacy comprehension and the Weekly Reader news magazine. Help make reading fun for dyslexic English language learners!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine opening a book and not understanding a word you see. Imagine excelling at math and not understanding why your literacy skills won't transfer. Those are my students: their reading disabilities make it difficult for them to engage during literacy lessons. That CAN change!
My students are learning disabled children in a New York public school.
Due to their disabilities, they have been placed in a self contained bilingual classroom. My students' parents, though invested in their education, are often paralyzed by their inabilities to communicate directly with service providers. These students deserve to get all they need in my classroom, and I am trying to make that happen. They are all very playful, very friendly boys, who often need a lot of attention and love because of their home situations. My students are very bright children, all of whom function properly at math but can not excel at similar levels in literacy. These kids deserve to experience the joy that is reading.
My Project
My students need high-interest books so that they can fully engage! I am requesting a set of high interest, low reading levels books that would give my students the confidence they need to be successful readers! Imagine opening a dictionary and not fully understanding what the words mean; well, with a visual children's dictionary, for example, we can help them. That is just one step to the gift of reading! Let's help them become more confident!
If my students' literacy skills can improve, they can move into less restrictive classrooms with an integrated student body. I think these children deserve to learn in a community, where they can model the behavior and the learning processes of other children. These kids are now in fourth and fifth grade and are still struggling readers; we can make sure they don't drop out by giving them the gift nobody has up to this point: the gift of literacy. Help me make sure my children stay in school until graduation by supporting our project!
The donations will make a difference because it will help my dyslexic children realize that what was missing was not skill, but interest.
At ages 9, 10, and 11, these children still can not read properly. They have the right to a proper education and the school can not provide the resources we need to make sure the learning happens in my classroom. These donations will help the most severe child finally understand that it isn't his fault that he writes numbers backwards.
