This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students walk into my classroom every day full of life, ready to learn and excited for what is in store for them that day. I teach at a Title I school in New York, where one hundred percent of our students receive complimentary breakfast and lunch. Many of my students receive backpacks with supplies at the beginning of the school year, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families.
Our school serves students pre-K through fifth grades and provides rigorous academics, fantastic teachers, and a safe learning environment.
Our goal is to prepare our students for success in middle school, high school, and college. However, there are times when we do not have the supplies we need.
My Project
As a teacher for the last ten years, I found that students will fall in love with reading when they have books that are exciting and interesting to read. That is why I am asking for new books for my avid readers. They love when they see a box come from Donors Choose because they know they are most likely going to receive new books to read. We need books that they feel represented in. Reading books with accurate pictures of students' own cultures can contribute to self-worth within students while allowing them to connect with themselves and their culture on a deeper level. Diverse representations of characters in multi-cultural books are beneficial to all readers.
