My Project

In my 7th-grade ELA classroom, I want to intentionally incorporate an independent reading section to affirm my students’ identities, foster literacy joy, and disrupt deficit narratives often imposed on low-income learners. This time empowers students to choose texts that reflect their experiences, interests, and communities, centering their voices in the learning process. By validating their reading choices—graphic novels, poetry, or contemporary fiction—I want to create a space where reading feels meaningful rather than mandatory. This practice aligns with my belief that literacy instruction must honor students’ lives, nurture critical thinking, and challenge the “pipeline” mindset that too often governs underserved schools.
