My Students

I teach at an urban Title I school. 75% of our students qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch. There are 700 students in our building. Our school has a diverse population, which includes a large number of students who are new to our country. There are 20 different native languages spoken in our building.

Band class is one of the favorites subjects for students in our school.

It is a place where all students have the opportunity to be successful, and are made to feel part of the family. They are able to express themselves through the universal language of music. Music connects them.

My Project

98% of our students play on instruments provided by the school district. The instruments include a factory-issued mouthpiece, which are adequate for beginners. Many of the instruments have been in the inventory for several years, and the mouthpieces are scratched and chipped from use by numerous students.

As students grow as musicians, they need mouthpieces that are designed to produce a more mature and characteristic tone.

The mouthpieces requested in this project will be issued to our most advanced players, in our 7th and 8th grade.

Beautiful tone is a prized possession of all musicians. The tone of the ensemble will blend more easily when all students in each section are using matched mouthpieces.
