it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students work hard all week to earn Fun Friday-an hour of time where they get to let their imaginations run wild and engage in educational play.
Our school is located in an economically disadvantaged urban neighborhood with a high immigrant population.
Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. They are a creative and lively bunch who love to make art, read to each other, dance, and act (their favorite characters to transform in to are Pigeon and Duckling from the Mo Willems series).
My Project
You'd be amazed at the wonders you can create with a little imagination and common items such as paper plates, pipe cleaners, and cupcake liners. The arts and crafts items will be used for a variety of projects that I have come up with (home made flower bouquets for Valentine's Day, cupcake liner snowflakes, paper plate owls, tissue paper animals) and anything else that my students dream up. The educational toys will be used during Fun Friday to help students engage in cooperative play and develop fine motor skills.
I believe in positive reinforcement as a classroom management tool.
Here's how it works: Students can earn a marble for the class jar by remaining on task, working well with partners, and a myriad of other things. Once the jar is full they get Fun Friday! Many of my students are dealing with circumstances that make it difficult for them to manage their emotions and behavior. With Fun Friday as an incentive, students learn to self-regulate and work together to reach a common goal.
