My Students
This year my students developed their own description of the perfect classroom. One of their biggest criteria was that our room have a lot of books. In looking through the collection in our room I see that we do not have enough Fantasy books.
My students are eager readers.
They are fifth graders in an economically challenged school (Title 1), I have readers from all levels from students who are just learning to love books all the way up to students reading at a middle school level. Great books are a fantastic way for my students to dream and learn.
My Project
We are about to embark on a journey into the genre of fantasy. My class will spend six weeks completing the Unit by Lucy Calkins (Heinemann) entitled, "Fantasy Book Clubs: The Magic of Themes and Symbols." All students will be engaged in reading a variety of fantasy books with the hope that they will become excited by the genre and hopefully pulled into a series of books that they feel they need to read.
We will learn about the genre, we will see how authors craft this type of story and how it compares to other genres that we are more familiar with. We will look at how authors develop setting and character. Students will look for life lessons and themes within the genre. We will read books as small groups, individually and also as a whole class.

They will have the opportunity to learn in small groups and apply their learning to their individual work. My students have difficult lives, I hope that they will learn to love this genre that can provide something of a vacation from their daily grind.
