My Students

Help make my old, falling apart classroom comfortable for my students by adding a reading corner rug so they no longer have to sit on concrete while at the classroom library.

My students are a very special bunch of Kindergarteners!

They are considered in the "highest poverty" bracket and most come from the shelters nearby. While they don't have much in this world in the way of material possessions, they are full of love and eager to learn. The school is an older NYC building and educates over 800 students everyday. As stated before, many of the students come from shelters and when they come to school, they are looking (and in need) for such much more than an education. They look to myself and co-teachers for structure, support, understanding and love. My colleagues and I try our best to be positive role models for our students so they will become productive members of society one day.

My Project

Right now my classroom library isn't a very inviting place. It is 4 books shelves up against the wall. I want to change that by making a reading corner where the students can relax, lay comfortably on the carpet and fall in love with reading. I would also like to use this new rug and newly designed space for my guided reading lessons as well. Hopefully in the nearby future I can add pillows as well and make the children feel as if they are in their home away from home in the classroom.

I know it is just a rug, but I hope it will do so much more for my students.

I hope this rug will help foster a love for reading in my classroom. Having this rug will help ensure my students will become more successful readers because they will have a more comfortable and exciting place to sit down with a book and practice reading.
