Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 4th grade students face challenges that no 9 year old should have to face. My school is a Title 1 Elementary School in Greenville, South Carolina. 100% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. My class is 60% Hispanic, 35% African American and 5% White. When I first came into my classroom, we only had 4 books in our classroom library. My students are struggling to find books that meet their interest in our library during independent reading time.
My Project
Part of building reading stamina with my students is supplying them with books that interest them. Research shows that allowing students to make choices about their reading material increased the likelihood that they would engage more in reading. Providing genuine student choices in reading is proven to increase effort and commitment to reading. Before the holiday break, I asked my students what their dream books would be for our classroom library. These books are chosen by my students and will give them the opportunity to get motivated and excited about reading time.
Several of my students do not have access to books at home, and I want to fill my classroom library with books that my students will love!
