My students need fast drying clay, and other crafts, so that they can create dioramas to accompany their written book reports.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We really want the characters in our book reports to come to life. My class of 6 hard-working children with special needs has begun to write their first book reports. We would love to create dioramas, but, since our school cannot afford supplies like clay, we are really disappointed.
Known in the public education world as a "small learning group," my classroom consists of 6 children with a variety of special needs, ranging from mild autism to hearing loss.
These students are bused from all over the city to my classroom, where they receive special education services and therapies. The students come from multi-cultural backgrounds and all qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning that they live on or below the poverty level. My students have much difficulty reading, but have been working very hard to create book reports on favorite stories. Now we would like to make dioramas that capture a scene in the story. The children are asking for crafts so that we can re-create scenes in the book. In a public school, facing budget cuts, even simple clay is hard to come by. By making our characters come to life with art, we would be building fine motor skills and learning, in a fun way, about the elements of a story.
My Project
My students love to read and are trying hard to write independently. However, they still need much assistance with spelling and punctuation. While writing is a struggle, my students are very creative. They love arts and crafts and hands-on activities.
As an incentive to finishing written book reports, I have promised the children that they will be able to make the book come to life artistically. We have basic supplies, like markers, crayons and colored pencils. However, we would really like to use our hands to create the characters in stories. The best way to do this would be by using a shoe box as a backdrop of a scene. Next, we would like to create the characters out of clay and paint them to make them more realistic. This is why we are desperately needing clay and other basic art supplies. Please help!
This project would make six sweet children with special needs very happy.
My class would love to be able to create a diorama of a favorite scene in a book to share with their families, classmates and you. It would be so much fun for the children to be able to add this creative piece to their written book reports, that they have worked so hard on.
