Known in the public education world as a "small learning group," my classroom consists of 6 children with a variety of special needs, ranging from mild autism to hearing loss. These students are bused from all over the city to my classroom, where they receive special education services and therapies. The students come from multi-cultural backgrounds and all qualify for free or reduced lunch, meaning that they live on or below the poverty level. My students have much difficulty reading, but have been working very hard to create book reports on favorite stories. Now we would like to make dioramas that capture a scene in the story. The children are asking for crafts so that we can re-create scenes in the book. In a public school, facing budget cuts, even simple clay is hard to come by. By making our characters come to life with art, we would be building fine motor skills and learning, in a fun way, about the elements of a story.
