My students need classroom supplies, printer supplies, and a tablet with educational games that will allow them to practice skills that were taught in an engaging way while developing their social skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Help my students developed a love for reading. They are economically challenged; 95% of them do not have Internet at home. Acquiring this tablet will complete my "Techy" center. The educational games will develop their social skills. Placing the chair socks will reduce the noise in our class.
My students attend title 1 elementary public school in an urban setting in South Florida.
98% of them qualify for free and reduced lunch. The majority of the students are of Haitian descent which is a bit of a challenge since most of their parents have not mastered the mechanics of the English language. Implementing Common Core Standards require students to write frequently and do in-depth research. I teach Language Arts/Social Studies to four classes for only 1.5 hour per day.
Although my classroom is accessible to the students at 7:00AM daily, which is 1.5 hours prior to the official starting time, only 30% of the students are able to take advantage and commit on a regular basis. My goal is to have my students acquire technological skills as well as developing their social skills by engaging in educational games. My students have a take charge attitude toward their education by making choices of specific activities to chose during center time. They are aware of their challenges.
My Project
The tablet I am requesting will enable our class to have an ongoing research center to improve their content knowledge, keyboard and writing skills. This will complete my technology center during differentiated instruction. The educational games will be used during center time, each student will get the opportunity to develop reading/language arts skills in an engaging way. They will have access to sharpened pencils without having to dig in their backpack or sharing pencils with their peers. This will eliminate time being wasted. All of this will take place in a noise reduced environment once we put the chair socks where they belong. As students are typing more, the more we use our classroom printer which require a toner and a photoconductor so that students and parents can view their final product on display.
This is the first time my students are researching via the Internet, and we need the additional tablet to have a center of four.
Most of my students do not have Internet at home. The majority of students are exposed to educational games only when they are in school.
