My Students

Our students are a bright group with diverse interests! As the library, we are at the heart of the school and there's not a single student that doesn't pass through our world at least a few times a month. We are a STEM school, and we also offer an Agricultural Education program as well as many AP and dual credit college courses.

Our school is in a relatively rural town, and we are the only high school in the area.

This allows a community feeling to remain a top priority of our staff. It is this community spirit that sets us apart from many schools around us, and it's something we're very proud of.

My Project

Recently our high school library has started a compassionate maker space where students can come in during open periods, lunch, and after school to make things that are then donated to a variety of charitable organizations. The kinds of things the students are making also give them usable lifelong skills, and the time they spend can also help reduce their own stress levels!

Already the response to this offering has been remarkable.

Our first "feature project" has been making blankets and stuffed elephants for an organization called Restore Innocence, which puts together bags of basic needs and a little comfort for children rescued from human and sex trafficking rings. Students were deeply touched that they could help people in these situations, and many have expressed excitement and gratitude that we now have this space available to them.

The materials requested here will allow us to participate in even more charitable projects and ensure that our sewing machines and other tools stay in good shape and can accommodate several students in the MakerSpace at one time. For example, the pins, pincushions, bobbins, thread, needles, and seam ripper will allow us to transition our sewing machines faster from project to project and ensure that we are using quality materials to pass on nice donations to charities. Students have also begun knitting hats for cancer patients, and we need the baskets contained in this request to store the donated and purchased yarn. The crochet and embroidery materials are for new donation projects we've identified for students to contribute to and more materials to teach students new skills that can also benefit them.

Students are also excited to take the lead finding additional charitable organizations for us to partner with, and I'm impressed and touched already by their interest. Thank you for supporting them.
