Make Math Mastery Materialize!

My students need math manipulatives and tools to be able to put abstract math concepts into concrete examples they can understand.

My Students

Teaching in a high-needs, Title One school, my students are often faced with challenges outside of the classroom. They are often unable to access technology outside of school hours for various reasons, including both socio-economic status and stressful family situations.

My goal is to my part in closing the achievement gap within my own district by providing my own students with opportunities to be fully exposed and excited about all of their academic content in and out of the classroom.

Most of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch due to their family's socioeconomic status. This means their stresses outside of the classroom are regarding more basic needs. This puts them at a disadvantage in their early lives, to their peers competing for college admissions and eventually, jobs down the road. I think exposing my students to extra opportunities to focus on academic topics outside of the classroom (or content specific times) will help to even the playing field. Although they can't necessarily find these moments on their own, I hope to provide them within our school community!

They are hardworking, motivated and engaged in any content I present to them!

My Project

My students need math manipulative pieces in order to make difficult math concepts understandable. Math understanding begins with concrete examples of what situation could actually be taking place behind the numbers, then moves toward mastery where students don't need to even visualize a situation and can work with the numbers themselves. In between those extremes, students need to be able to literally act out mathematical situations in order to comprehend what is happening and what mathematical operations they may need to do to solve the problem.

My students need to have manipulative pieces that make sense mathematically, to be able to demonstrate mathematical operations in a concrete way!

Instead of trying to demonstrate operations with toys that sort of make sense, or can represent these ideas, these pieces will provide us with intentional toys that completely fit the mathematical concepts we are learning.

These pieces are also extremely helpful to me special needs students in particular. Students with communication struggles can literally show their thinking by manipulating the pieces, which will give us both the ability to avoid frustrations previously encountered when I couldn't gauge their understanding properly, or they had trouble sharing ideas with peers.
