Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I will be teaching third grade at a new school in Maryland in the fall! I am looking forward to creating a community of learners that will become a family.
I will be teaching at a school that has students from diverse socioeconomic and racial backgrounds and who face many challenges at home, and I aim to create and foster a welcoming environment in school where students feel safe and enjoy learning.
These students already face a lot of challenges, and entering third grade is a challenge that I want to be able to help them with since third grade is a year marked with various changes for students. Whether it be shifting from learning to read to reading to learn, or the start of PARCC testing in the state of Maryland, it is very important for teachers to assist students in this very important year. I want to be there for these students and help them with whatever I can.
My Project
Having access to fraction towers, place value blocks, and the other manipulatives will not only help to engage students who learn best by hands-on activities but help to make math concepts more visual for students to understand. Having these manipulatives will help students grasp concepts that I will be teaching them in the first half of the year (used for teaching place value, centers, and fractions)!
Having a set of these that are enough for small group/ whole group would be great because the current manipulatives at my school are very limited.
Fractions have always been an area that my former third graders struggled with. I had access to four fraction tower kits at my old school and saw how they made comparing fractions easier for my students. My only regret is that I was not able to provide each student with a set. I'm hoping to get 13 to start off with and hopefully get more later on.
Having these in my classroom will be great for students to have access to all year round without having to worry that the math lab does not have the manipulatives available.
