Make Learning Sense-Ational! Specialized Sensory Equipment Needed
My students need specialized sensory equipment, such as weighted vests and lap pads, to help them best access the school environment and therapy sessions.
Do you remember how proud you were when you first learned how to write, cut out a project, or tie your own shoes? For my kids, these tasks can seem incredibly difficult. Occupational Therapy helps them build the foundations they need to master these skills in order for them to succeed in school!
I work in a special education D75 public school in Brooklyn, New York.
Many of my students have Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, or other developmental delays that make learning in a typical classroom difficult. Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and the extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.
My Project
Think about how hard it is to sit at a desk all day, especially when you are a kid and want to move. Now add attention deficit disorders and sensory processing difficulties into the mix, and you've got a big problem for learning! Although we have some specialized equipment in our therapy room, much of it has become old and does not function the way it should. New weighted vests and lap pads will help provide calming and organizing input for students who have difficulty sitting still and attending to tasks. Z-Vibe and chewies allow for students who seek sensory input by chewing on their clothes, fingers, and other objects to get the oral input they need in a more functional and safe way.
By giving students the tools they need to help them focus, they will be able to better engage in lessons.
This equipment is especially important for our students who have increased difficulty sitting and learning when their specific needs are not met.
