Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students in my class are amazing because a few months ago, their previous teacher took another job in a different state and left right after Thanksgiving. They had a sub for a couple weeks leading up to winter break and were taught material that was basically foreign to them. The other 4th grade teacher uses her own material and the sub used what she gave him however, the students had a hard time with that adjustment. I have been with them since the beginning of the year due to my previous position as a paraprofessional in the class and am now their new 4th grade teacher.

These students are eager to learn new material and thrive when given the chance to assist in teaching the other students what they know.

Even though I have come in to this new position with them, the transition has been easy because of my background as a para in the class before. We are able to work together nicely and I love teaching them new ways to learn and retain information. What makes me most happy about teaching them, is that they use bits of what I have taught them during tests!

My Project

With the materials that I have selected for my classroom, my students this year and in the upcoming years of my career as a teacher, will have adequate tools to help them learn new things. Because of the time and learning that was lost due to our shutdown, students are well behind in their grade levels and performance. Students are not keeping up with the common core in math and reading because of the distractions from learning at home.

I believe that giving them an opportunity to have fun while they learn is key to their success.

Our students thrive on gaming and other means of entertainment, in having games where they learn but have fun would help them greatly. I would be using the math manipulatives and games in centers after they have learned and mastered the content.

By giving them new books to read and choose from, I believe sparks their interest because I emphasize the importance of reading and give them ideas on books to check out. I think that the other materials will also help with their understanding and comprehension in stories as well as grammar.
