My students are very diverse; many different culture groups are represented and many students speak a different language at home. Despite our differences, we work hard and play hard together. It is our goal to be encouraging and respectful classmates to one another. We focus on developing positive character traits such as trustworthiness, perseverance, and good citizenship. My school is located in a low-income area. About half of my students bring in school supplies at the beginning of the year. We make do by sharing supplies. School-wide, every student receives a free breakfast and lunch.
I teach a combination class of 4th and 5th grade students. As I teach one grade level, the other group is working on the floor independently. These floor seats will make their learning time more comfortable. You see, I have lap trays, but without a chair with back support, the trays are uncomfortable to use. I also have pillows to line the wall, but there are not enough pillows for all students to use. These two seats would fit our needs well. It will also allow students the choice of how they would like to work, which will make their independent work time more productive.
