My Students

My students face adversity in their everyday lives. Some come from broken homes, group homes, or even no homes at all. Many were born and raised in this inner city region and have been immersed in the unique culture all their lives, and many have left everything they knew and loved behind in their home country to start a better life. Some have the privilege of having parents whom have their support in education both emotionally and financially, but unfortunately many do not.

My kids are some of the most diverse, passionate, and resilient young people I know.

Most of my students also work jobs after school to support themselves and their families. Despite these unthinkable obstacles, they still come to school as if nothing is wrong. They greet me with a smile and a hug, ready to learn. They want to do something big with their lives and exude passion, energy, and creativity from morning to the end of the day. They want to go far in life. With your wonderful assistance, these kids have a way of demonstrating knowledge in a fun and interactive way instead of just worksheets.

My Project

I would love to have whiteboards, erasers, and markers for all of my students. A class set would enable them to participate in class in a more interactive way and for me to be able to quickly assess their skills.

It would especially encourage those students who do not feel comfortable using their voice to give answers to still feel comfortable participating.

My students learn best with any method that involves turning lessons into a game or an interactive activity. They also love competition, so these boards could also be used in group settings and encourage group efforts and collaboration.
