My Project
I teach disadvantaged AAPI students in an urban high school here in Honolulu, HI. Many of my students are of various cultural backgrounds, but they are all familiar with issues of adversity. The problem is, sometimes, they feel that they are alone, and think that it's "status quo" to stay in the same struggle.
The resilience and power of the human spirit, when challenged by adversity, helps an individual to seize their own strength and rise above what has been thrown to them.
The books that I have chosen for my students to read, discuss, and explore have this idea in mind. Controversial? Maybe. However, in a safe, inclusive environment, the discussion that these materials would spark could also mean the difference between feeling trapped, and feeling free.
Students of all reading levels could learn something from these texts, and they would fit in with our growing inclusive classroom library of AAPI and Black History, while also introducing some traditional literature. It is my hope that students will be able to reflect on these characters, and takeaway something that they find comfort in.
