Our students are a lively group of 7th and 8th graders. We are one of the smallest middle schools in Fairfax County and we're a tight-knit group. Our students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and socioeconomic levels - 30% of our students are English language learners, close to 20% receive special education services, and well over half speak a language other than English at home.
Literacy is our focus so that we can make sure our students have the same opportunities in life as those who grow up in more affluent areas.
To support this, we have literacy programs and activities for our students to make sure they leave middle school as lifelong learners and readers.
We are bringing in author Alan Gratz as part of our focus on historical fiction in our 7th and 8th grade English classes. Gratz writes very popular middle-grade historical fiction novels like Refugee and Projekt 1065. We have used his books as book club selections at school, and our 8th grade English classes are using his books this quarter in class. Our students love his books and we’re excited for an author to visit Key students.
Bringing in a well-known author is an amazing opportunity for our students, but it does come with a price tag.
