Make Great Literature Accessible To All Students

My students need a listening center and books on CD.

My Students

Children with learning disabilities deserve to read high interest books that will capture their imaginations and lead them to enjoy reading and learning.

My students are a diverse group who attend an urban public school.

They come from amazingly diverse backgrounds ethnically, socioeconomically, an in terms of their learning abilities. Our school stands out from many other public schools because of our progressive social studies-based curriculum. From block building in PreK - 2nd grade to visiting Congress in 5th grade, our kids learn through hands-on experiences and trips. Our principal fights to keep class size relatively small, so that our children have the greatest opportunity to learn.

My Project

As mentioned in the previous paragraph, I have a diverse array of learners. This year, I have a high number of students with reading-based learning disabilities. These are intelligent children who cannot read grade-level appropriate books. Last year we instituted a partner and literature circle curriculum in our class. It went off like gangbusters. The students loved discussing the books they were reading with each other. I want the children with learning disabilities to be included in these literature circles. I don't want them to be relegated to picture books due to their lower reading levels. I want them to read books that represent their interests and social experiences. Last year I read books aloud to certain students. There are only one or two adults in our class at a time, though, and many more students who need to be read to. Having a listening center is the answer to this problem.

I am so thrilled with the prospect of introducing all of my students to meaningful literature.

I don't want to leave anyone out. Having this reading center, and these books on CD, will be a great way to involve the whole class in reading high-level, high-interest books.
