Make Coding Accessible for All!

Help me give my students a Spike Prime robot and Expansion kit, for use both in our school-wide STEAM program and in after school programs such as Lego League and STEAM Club!

My Project

Our school is in a low-income area, and raising students' sights from making ends meet to possible chosen careers in technology fields can be life-changing.

When a student grasps a new concept such as coding, the world opens up to them in exciting ways.

This can be a very engaging process for kids who struggle to maintain consistent work in school, and can encourage their success in other areas. As they learn to organize a step-by step process to accomplish a robot task, it can also translate to understanding step-by step processes in other subjects, and even the steps needed to accomplish long-term goals.

In addition, students who engage in STEAM and Lego clubs meet the mentors for those clubs at the junior high level as part of the program, giving them a social group and landing place when they transition to the junior high setting. Working in a team mentors students through learning communication, collaboration, respect, and inclusion. These clubs and the school-wide STEAM program are available for all students, regardless of race, gender, or income.

An additional robot will allow more students to receive the hands-on experience to understand the life skills related to step processes, and the connections of being in these clubs.
