My Students

My classroom is a diverse, inclusive classroom of low-income students aged 3 to 5. For most of my students, this is their first learning experience. All of our students receive complimentary breakfast and lunch at school. We are located in the inner city of Pittsburgh and provide a free comprehensive program that is designed to nurture and support each child as we prepare them to transition to kindergarten.

My students are very interested in learning about letters, math, social studies, engineering, and science, and they enjoy exploring technology.

They are dreamers, thinkers, and questioners and love to discover new things about the world around them. Despite their challenges, they come to school each day ready to work and play with smiles and positive attitudes.

My Project

I am requesting brand new toys to give our housekeeping area a make-over. Our preschoolers love to cook up the most delicious meals when they enter our housekeeping area during Discovery Time. Little chefs always play a big part in their classroom kitchen.

Pretend play helps our students to understand the power of language.

When preschoolers engage in pretend (or dramatic) play, they are actively experimenting with the social and emotional roles of life. Through cooperative play, our preschoolers learn how to take turns, share responsibility, and creatively problem-solve.

In our classroom, make-believe play is a safe and secure way to experiment and test boundaries, and build confidence. Through make-believe, pretend play allows our students to experience and express both positive and negative feelings. Our housekeeping area is in desperate need of brand new toys to foster our preschooler's love of make-believe play. Providing my students with durable pretend food and kitchen materials will allow for them to explore using imagination and creativity.

A kitchen dramatic play area fosters development in language and communication, social skills and teamwork, life skills, healthy food choices, fine motor skills, and visual recognition among many other developmental skills. Being able to provide my students with such a variety of durable and long-lasting reliable items would be an amazing opportunity with endless learning possibilities.
