Make Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Hands Free and Mobile
Help me give my students who are emergent communicators access to Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)by providing cases for iPads. This would allow for language modeling on AAC devices across various settings throughout the school day.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Students with complex communication needs should have constant access to their communication devices throughout the school day, most commonly in the form of apps on iPads. The proficiency of students in using Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) devices on iPads heavily relies on communication partners who model language and attribute meaning. Proficiency in AAC enables students to express their thoughts at their convenience. While our school division provides AAC modeling devices on iPads, assistants lack protective cases with hand and shoulder straps, making their iPads more prone to damage. Consequently, they are hesitant to bring the devices to areas where communication and joy thrive, such as the playground, art class, PE, and hallways. Increasing access to communication devices can be facilitated by providing more iPad cases.
