Make American History Interesting!

Help me give my students a love of history with the book How to Hide and Empire!

My Students

They have applied to come to this school from different counties for a variety of reasons. Some are first-generation college students, some are at risk of dropping out, some are accelerated learners. Because of the early college concept and the groups of students we target to serve, we have a very eclectic group of students and they make up a very impressive little family. They are all from a rural area and money is always tight here. I have never worked at a better school than this and I love the fact that my students view the school as a place they want to go and hang out. I've even had to tell kids they had to go home because I need to lock the door.

I'd love for my classroom to reflect the family feel that this school engendered in its students.

By the time they are ready to graduate with their high school diploma, the majority with their associate's degree already in hand, the graduating class of around twenty-five to thirty is very much an extended family.

My Project

How to Hide an Empire takes a broader view of American History and takes many of the people and events which we learn about in American History and meshes them into a flowing and intriguing story. This book will cause the students to ask questions and think about the role of the United States in the world and develop critical thinking skills. This book presents a myriad of fun stories that impress upon the reader the importance and impact of decisions in the past.

How to Hide an Empire will allow my students to merge American History into a cohesive whole and view the impact of American History on their world today.

I believe that this book will engage students who may not regularly be interested in history because of the eclectic stories that it tells. It will also be a great way to weave literacy into my history curriculum and benefit students by learning to read a scholarly text.
