Help me give my students the tools they need to interact and engage with the mathematics! My Algebra 2 students would love the hands-on nature of the Tower of Hanoi and are in need of graph-paper notebooks please!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Math is not every student's favorite subject, but my goal is to convert as many students as I can to Team Math! Personal whiteboards are so useful, especially when the kids are nervous about making mistakes on paper, but I am constantly in need of markers and erasers. Almost all of my students are low-income, and even buying a notebook for math class can be a stretch for them. Additionally, graph-paper notebooks are harder to find, despite being more useful, particularly in Algebra 1 & 2. My students also need help with organizational tools, and folders are a great aid to help them keep track of handouts and worksheets.
The biggest thing on my list though, the one that inspired me to start this DonorsChoose project, are the Tower of Hanoi sets.
I inherited a few incomplete sets from my predecessor, for which I have had to improvise some discs, and the Algebra 2 students have loved them. They much prefer the physical version to the online simulator, much to my delight as their generation often chooses online versions for most things. The students really seem to engage in the lesson when there is something they can manipulate with their hands, and they were so determined to solve the puzzle in as few moves as possible that some of them even protested when it was time to move on to the next part of the Sequences lesson. Having more of a full class set of these Towers would really help me bring some more students into the lesson, and maybe even provide a doorway toward "Team Math"
