This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a great bunch. It's always a mix of abilities and personalities. As a teacher you'll get students who are overachievers, can doers, and the less than ambitious kind. Regardless of the students' caliber, a teacher always asks the best out of them. This is why teaching art is a great way for all students to show what they can do.

My students come from a community that has one of the lowest poverty levels and almost 100% of my students qualify for free or reduced rate lunches.

Regardless, my students come in with decent attendance and effort. There is always room for improvement. My students push through many obstacles and many times endure broken air conditioners and lack of funds for proper materials.

Students are not fancy, overbearing, or have a chip on their shoulders. They have a willingness to try and do their best regardless of their social economic status. My students have a funny way of thinking about things. One example is when students who do remarkably well think their work is subpar. This is when I say their work is beautiful. They disagree and keep working on it and sometimes, they redo the work.

My Project

Traditional watercolor is a very difficult and daunting task. I want my students to be exposed to painting and work to become confident in using watercolor techniques. My students lack the practice and exposure to art materials outside of graphite pencils and pens. Since this medium is foreign, it will be a challenge. So using something like a watercolor marker, it would make the transition easier. For some of my students who lack refined motor skills, using markers would build their confidence. I enjoy teaching watercolor that has a painterly effect. Doing so is easier said than done. The theme of this project will be to paint the place that makes you happy. Students will write and describe a place where they feel happy and then using watercolor, they will depict it using techniques we learned in class.
