Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At our Elementary, we believe that all students deserve the chance to see their dreams come to life. Our school serves students in a high-needs area of Durham, NC and 98% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Combatting systemic poverty and injustice requires leveraging every possible strategy we can to engage our students and make them excited to come to school every day. Our students have made amazing academic progress over the last several years, but post-pandemic absenteeism continues to be a major barrier to our students truly excelling.
Creating a fully-realized MakerSpace will give our students yet another reason to come to school excited to learn and explore.
Our school is creating a dedicated space toward this end, and we have a team of enthusiastic educators who are committed to utilizing the resources in the MakerSpace across our curriculum. We're seeking a Cardboard Cutter and a 3D Printer for use in this space.
All of our teachers have ideas about how to incorporate 3D printing and design into their curriculum next year. Our art teacher, Ms. Miles, plans to have students design and print their own custom nameplates for their desks. Mr. Leikind wants to utilize custom-printed parts for his force and motion experiments in the Fall. Coach Matheson wants to allow his students to create real custom obstacles as they create their end-of-the-year mini-golf courses. Our librarian, Ms. Januzzi, wants to continue having her 4th graders write and perform their own plays - but now with custom-designed props and scenery!
Many of our students have been in the country for less than a year. A space focused around design and encouraging creativity (in any language) would help us ensure equitable exposure to advanced ideas and open our students' minds to a world of possibilities!
