My school is part of a very large inner city school system with over 50 schools. Students come to us from various backgrounds and with very different life experiences.
The district has been making major overhauls to 'struggling' schools.
Our school recently went from being on academic watch, to making academic progress. We would like our students scores to show more than progress but rather to demonstrate that our school is exemplary.
The teachers at my school meet every Wednesday and comb through data to figure out what we can do to better meet the needs of our students. We are all working so hard, but there still has to be a better way to see more successes!
My Project
Our students first take the state standardized ISTEP test in third grade. We have noticed, while discussing data, that many students are truly struggling with the concept of making inferences.
Since they are lacking this skill, it is negatively effecting their reading comprehension abilities. For example, in a reading passage, it may explain that, "Billy went to his friend's house. There was cake, balloons and presents." It didn't say that this was a birthday party, kids must infer that from the information given. Then they are asked questions. If they don't understand how to infer, they will not correctly answer the questions.
This needs to change, so our plan is to introduce inferring as early as kindergarten continuing through fifth grade. Your donation will be purchasing ten different resources such as a "Making Inferences Card Box", "Making Inferences Listening Center Skill Pack", "Reading Passage Inference Kit" and more!
With the supplies you are helping to purchase, we will use these kits to make sure that the concept of making inferences is not something that will deter from our students education again!
