Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Located right along the Mexican border, my students have shown their dedication to furthering their education. Majority of them are first generation students that come from a low-income background that had no idea how to even apply to college. One thing they do excel at is passion, I witnessed it firsthand from the band to a guitarist both going to their UIL State competitions. Some of them have fallen in love with physics and criminal justice, while other enjoy the arts of music and graphic designs; none of them are alike.
My students are determined to break through the statistics that comes with their background, they just need help with their confidence to do so.
COVID-19 came out a shock to all of us, but it really took a toll on their idea of leaving their homes. For some, their last time on campus was sophomore year.
I want their Decision Day to be the event that excites them and see that people are there to support their choices. Many families can't afford to support their child on their own, so I reaching out to this amazing community to help us do so.
My Project
These supplies, I am requesting, already have a purpose, they just need to get to the right student. By making their environment a home, these students will be reminded that there is someone out there that is rooting for them to continue. The mini fridge will serve as a remind that there is someone who wants to make sure the have a nice meal to store and eat. The printers will remind them during their late night study sessions that library hours don't determine their educational hours. The microwave will show them that whenever they are in a rush they are appreciated and recognized for their efforts.
A student's story isn't defined just by themselves, but by the faith those around them put in for them.
