Make 2nd Grade Reading Fun!

My students need 93 copies of "Ramona Quimby, Age 8" so they can be exposed to quality literature that inspires a love of reading.

My Students

Have you ever walked into a bookstore and felt that excitement over getting to explore all those new books? My students are surrounded by aging books that need constant repairing. Please help us discover the excitement of new books that open a new world.

My second grade students love to read!

I teach at a traditional school in Arizona where reading and math are the focus. We have been exploring our reading textbook and reading other great literature. When they visit the library they check out books like The Wimpy Kid and Junie B. Jones. I want to expose them to other literature that often gets overlooked.

My Project

If we are able to bring class sets of Ramona Quimby, Age 8 into the second grade our students will get to widen their experience with literature. My school does not have a large library of classroom book sets for the primary grades. Almost every set they do have is geared towards the middle grades. Bringing Ramona to the classroom will give our students the chance to see that stories go beyond the length of what is in our textbook. We would like to integrate what we are learning in reading and taking it into other subjects. Some ideas we have are to create story problems in math that use Ramona as a backdrop, study fruit flies like Ramona does, and write wanted posters for Willa Jean. Ramona is popular again with the movie, and we want students to see that the book is even better!

At my school, the students in the upper grades mainly learn about reading through the use of novel sets.

My students want to go beyond their textbooks and explore novels as well. Bringing Ramona Quimby, Age 8 into the classroom will not only expose students to quality literature, but also get them excited to read. Ramona is a fun story that will engage students and hopefully create a life long love of reading.
