Maintaining a Holistic Learning Experience for Children with Autism
Help me give my students learning materials that meet their sensory needs, encourage their growth, allow them to reach their potential, and keep them comfortable and safe.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
Children with autism often experience sensory processing differences, which can affect how they perceive and respond to sensory input from their environment. These differences can impact their ability to learn and engage with the world around them. Providing sensory materials can help create a more inclusive learning environment by offering opportunities for exploration, self-regulation, and engagement.
Some children with autism may be hypersensitive or hyposensitive to sensory stimuli.
Sensory materials can help them regulate their sensory experiences by providing calming input or offering sensory stimulation that helps them focus.
Sensory materials can improve attention and focus. Fidget toys can provide tactile stimulation that helps some children concentrate better.
Sensory materials can create opportunities for exploration and learning. The cookie cutters in different shapes and letters will allow children to meet their academic goals while using kinetic sand, combining their learning with their sensory needs.
For our students who need constant movement, the trampoline allows them to stay in one place to learn. The same is true of the swing chair, for students who need constant pressure or a swinging sensation. The magnetic writing boards help children learn to write their letters while meeting sensory needs. Many of our children need compression vests to keep their bodies calm, so it is necessary to have them in different sizes.
Art projects can also be an excellent way for children with autism to express themselves creatively, develop fine motor skills, and engage with their surroundings. With this donation, each child will use disposable cameras to take pictures to use in an end-of-the-year collage. Each child will also get their own t-shirt to decorate.
Overall, sensory materials play a valuable role in supporting the learning and development of children with autism, helping them engage more fully in their environment and reach their full potential.
