Children with autism often experience sensory processing differences, affecting how they perceive and respond to sensory input from their environment. These differences can impact their ability to learn and engage with the world around them. Providing sensory materials can help create a more inclusive learning environment by offering exploration, self-regulation, and engagement opportunities.
Materials such as noise-canceling headphones can block unwanted sounds and regulate sensory input.
Wearing headphones can provide comfort and security, helping children feel more grounded and focused. Headphones that plug into computers will allow our children to listen to music or watch a video as a sensory break without disturbing other students. For our students who need constant movement or pressure, the exercise ball or resistance bands will allow them to stay in one place to learn. Stress balls provide a safe outlet for students who need to release energy or frustration.
Several of our children have oral fixation, which can manifest as a persistent need for oral stimulation, such as chewing or eating objects. Sensory chew toys and chewy snacks allow these children to meet this need safely. Other snacks are necessary for children sensitive to food taste and texture and only eat certain foods. Our children need to have plenty of snacks they like available so that they are well-fed and ready to learn.
Art projects can also be an excellent way for children with autism to express themselves creatively, develop fine motor skills, and engage with their surroundings. The painting materials and the mason jars will be used for this purpose. For children learning to speak and read, the talking alphabet is vital.
Overall, sensory materials play a valuable role in supporting the learning and development of children with autism, helping them engage more fully in their environment and reach their potential.
