My students are passionate, talented, funny and persevering. They have to be, in order to survive in one of the worst neighborhoods in the South Bronx. They come from broken homes, foster care, group homes and several are coming from homeless or abused family shelters. Despite these circumstances, my kids are eager to come to school and find a path out of their situation with the power of an education. I have never met a stronger group of young men and women in my twenty plus years of teaching.
These students are so disadvantaged that many of them don't have access to the simplest supplies at home.
I want them to be exposed to as much as possible so that they don't fall behind in their future educational endeavors. They could have a very bleak outlook on what life has to offer them but the amazing thing is they don't. I strive every day to be a positive role model for them and reinforce the idea they can make a difference in their own lives with the power of an education.
My Project
My students are an amazing group. They have overcome so much in their lives already and have become amazing student counselors. In recognition of their work, they have been given an old book closet to make their own counseling space.
The seniors are super excited about having their own space to help each other.
The problem is that it's so small, none of our regular teacher desks really fit. That's why I'm asking for this small console table. It's the perfect size for a desk and even has a drawer. Since the walls are plain, the magnetic chalkboard would be perfect for posting their ideas/schedules/anything they can think of. The vinyl wall stickers will help make the rest of the incredibly small room look vibrant and make it cozy rather than tiny. Since I already diffuse essential oils in my classroom, they would love their own diffuser and oils to make their space the perfect "zone" for working through problems as they arise.
This is an unusual project but one that has amazing possibilities. Giving these seniors their own little conference space is empowering them to help each other through problems that you and I can only imagine. They are being given a chance to be more adult about their feelings and work through situations in ways that promote creative problem solving and personal growth. Making that space comfortable will give them ownership of it and encourage compassion.
