My Project

My 5th-grade students attend school through a unique Distance Learning Program and live on four different islands in the state of Hawaii. Students in our program have strong digital literacy skills and are adept in using virtual programs and manipulatives across many subject areas. Sometimes however it can be challenging to provide all students with equal access to hands-on activities since we are spread across the state of Hawaii. We will be studying monarch butterflies in our upcoming science unit and I would love for each student to be able to observe and care for their own monarch chrysalis during this unit.

The hands-on learning with a live chrysalis will provide an incredibly memorable and educational experience for our Distance Learning students.

We will learn about the life cycle of a butterfly, make daily qualitative and quantitative observations of our chrysalises, analyze and graph our data, learn about challenges monarch butterflies face and how to support in repopulating the species and learn how to care for monarchs at the different stages of their life.
