This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds and have a myriad of needs. 98% of students qualify for free lunch and a lot live below the poverty line. Many have single parents that work multiple jobs, and my students either watch younger siblings or work after school to help pay the rent. Because of this, participating in private musical instruction or outside performance group has not been an option. However, they are very creative and eager to learn. They desire to participate in extracurricular performance opportunities any chance they get.

For the majority of my students, the first time they ever perform on stage is during their high school career.

But they are no stranger to music. They bring with them the different styles and sounds of their home countries, rich histories, and cultures, languages, memories, passion, dedication, and excitement.

Many have moved to this country with the hope of finding a new and better life filled with opportunity. My hope is to give every student the opportunity to succeed in music and performance whenever possible.

My Project

My students are in need of quality music at various levels. When I began this program 4 years ago, my school owned NOTHING. Over the years, we have acquired instruments, uniforms and supplies. However, we still struggle with music. The biggest challenge is that music is not reused from year to year. Students can take band for multiple years, so that means we need a music library with enough pieces of music to provide a rotation of at least four years so that students do not repeat a song. We also need music at various levels so that the music can challenge the students as they progress from year to year.

A well-established music library is as necessary as chapter books at multiple reading levels in an English Language Arts class.

The music requested here spans across four different levels of difficulty for two different groups, to allow our musicians to grow from year to year - from beginners to well established high school performers. This project will supply enough music for two concerts for our chorus and band. We look too generous donors like you to help make our program possible!
